1389323 Knitting machines; pattern mechanisms EDOUARD DUBIED & CIE SA 4 April 1972 [6 April 1971] 15368/72 Heading D1C [Also in Division G3] A knitted area consists of a plurality of Jacquard pattern surfaces arranged in any particular array and a circular knitting machine is controlled by logic circuitry to produce the required overall pattern. Figure 5 shows a typical pattern that is required where 49c is the repeated pattern surface and 49f is a background pattern. The plugboard 1 shown under the pattern is the crosspoint matrix 1 shown in Figure 1 and the active crosspoints are those under each pattern surface. In the example shown each pattern surface is 100 x 120 stitches and these figures are set into the X and Y selectors 9 and 16 respectively. The overall size of the area is 8 x 7 repeats of the pattern surface and these figures are set into selectors 15 and 22 respectively. In operation the machine control 8 is arranged to knit background pattern determined by colour bar 24 unless matrix 1 gives an output when the stitches knitted are determined by memory 2. The Jacquard circular knitting machine is stated to have 36 knitting posts. Control System (Figure 1) Memory 2 contains the details of each stitch in the required pattern surface or surfaces and is addressed by decoders 6 and 7 which are supplied with the stitch location parameters x, y. These parameters are calculated in calculators 4, 5 which operate in conjunction with the devices 9-15, 16-20 which compute the values shown in binary code. At the end of each pattern surface, which is defined by the number set on selectors 9 and 16, the matrix 1 is interrogated by applying a zero to the respective vertical wires. In the position where the crosspoint is made the zero is transferred through digital switch 17 to a further digital switch 23 so that the informationon leads 8 is directly returned through leads 23 and the switching means 8 will respond to the memory output and provide pattern surface .control signals to the knitting machine needles. If the input to gating arrangement 23 is a 'one', then background colour information from keyboard 24 is sent through leads 23 to switching means 8. The control system is controlled by the sequence command device 29 which is not otherwise described.
