Abstract

1389024 Uses of luminescence AGFAGEVAERT 14 Dec 1972 [31 Dec 1971] 61050/71 Heading C4S [Also in Division H5] A radiographic intensifying screen comprises at least one metallic layer including a metal of atomic number in the range 46 to 83 and at least one fluorescent screen including at least one substance of the general formula where M is one of Y, La, Gd, or Lu; M<SP>1</SP> is one of Dy, Er, Eu, Ho, Nd, Pr, Sm, Tb, Tm, or Yb; X is S or a halogen; n is between 0À0002 and 0À2; w is 1 when X is a halogen; or 2 when X is sulphur. The metallic layer preferably includes at least one of Ag, Sn, Te, Tl, W, Pt, Au, Hg, Ta, Pb or Bi. The fluorescent material can emit light in the wavebands 320-450 nm., 450-570 nm., or 550-700 nm. Examples of the fluorescent substance are the oxysulphides of yttrium, gadolinium or lanthanum activated by terbium, or a mixture of yttrium and lanthanum oxysulphides activated by europium. The metallic layer can be supported on paper, glass, cloth or plastics film. The fluorescent substance can be of grain size 5 to 50 Á and dispersed in an organic binder in a layer 0À05 to 0À5 mm. thick. The fluorescent layer or an adjacent layer can include a "screening" dye to reduce light reflected or scattered in the screen.
