Abstract
1389016 Boots &c C I C RALPHS Ltd 29 Aug 1972 [2 Sept 1971] 41100/71 Heading A3B A method of lasting the forepart of a shoe includes the steps of arranging an upper loosely disposed about a last with a lasting margin projecting therefrom, clamping the upper against the periphery of the sole part of the last, subjecting the upper to a mechanical stressing to bring it to the required shape, and then, while the upper is still clamped, turning over the lasting margin and securing it to an insole. As described the method is performed on a last having a forepart filler portion 42 which is movable from a retracted position to the position shown in Fig. 6 to effect the mechanical stressing of the upper. The sole plate 36, waist portion 38 and heel portion 40 are mounted on a fixed column in a lasting machine and the forepart filler portion 42 is mounted on a column 52 which can be moved lengthwise by an actuator 60 to effect dressing of the upper. The heel portion 40 is removably mounted on the column 48 to facilitate placing and removal of the upper from the last. The machine operates as follows:-the upper 44 (which has previously been heated in oven 34) and insole 46 are assembled on the last with the forepart filler 42 in its retracted position and an insole clamp 170, 172 is moved to operative position by actuator 166. The pincer assembly 22 is then moved to operative position and the toe end of the upper is gripped by pincer 131 which is then raised. Side pincers 132 then swing inwardly and grip the upper and a clamping band 118 moves upwardly and forwardly to its operative position. During this upward movement the clamping band 118 engages the side pincers 132 and raises them to tension the upper. The clamping band 118 is then operated to clamp the upper against the periphery of the sole plate 36 of the last and the pincers 131, 132 then release the upper and move to their inoperative position. The forepart filler portion 42 of the last is then moved by actuator 60 to stress the upper. The upper is then cooled by jets of air from nozzles 180. A wiper head 16 then moves to its operative position, the wipers (not shown) are operated and bedding pressure is exerted by actuator 90. The wiper head 16, insole clamps 170, 172 and clamping band 118 then move back to their inoperative positions. A sole unit may then be secured to the lasted upper. A heater 158 is lowered to the position shown dotted in Fig. 4 to activate adhesive applied to a sole unit positioned in pad box 138. The heater 158 is raised by actuator 162 and the pad box 138 carrying the sole unit is moved to operative position by actuator 142. Bedding pressure is then applied by actuator 152.
