Abstract

1389009 Theft alarms EMI Ltd 3 May 1972 [4 May 1971] 12861/71 Heading G4N In a theft alarm system for the protection of an object, a cable 2, retractable into a housing 1 has at least one conductor connected at the housing end of the cable to a circuit 16 and at the free end of the cable to a connector 6 and at least one further conductor which is either not connected to the circuit or is so connected as to cause an alarm to be given if it is short-circuited to said one conductor. The cable 2 may be passed through or over part of the object to be protected (e.g. through a wheel of a protected vehicle) and the connector 6 inserted into a complementary connector 7 so as to complete the circuit 16 in such a way that if said one conductor is broken the alarm is given. As described, resistors 13, 14 may be included in series with some of the conductors of the cable 2 or may be replaced by printed resistive elements on a tape-like cable. The housing 1 may include means for rewinding the cable 2, provided with brushes so as to make connections to the conductors. The circuit 16 of otherwise unspecified form may be responsive to the resistance of the circuit so as to defeat attempts to bridge certain of the conductors of cable 2 before disconnecting same. The conductors of cable 2 may be colour coded or may be all the same colour and some of them may not be connected to the circuit 16 so as to confuse a potential thief.
