Abstract

1388951 Co-sulphurized blend of triglyceride and olefin SUN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT CO 18 Feb 1972 [19 Feb 1971 19 April 1971 26 April 1971 24 Jan 1972] 7536/72 Headings C5C and C5F A blend of (a) 50-90 parts by vol. of a triglyceride having fatty acid moieties of 9-22 carbon atoms at least 45 mole per cent of which contain one double bond, and (b) 50-10 parts by volume of a C 2 -C 24 olefinic hydrocarbon of the formula R<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>C=CR<SP>3</SP>R<SP>4</SP> wherein R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are H or alkyl and R<SP>4</SP> is H, alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl or alkaryl is co-sulphurized by adding 7À5-25 wt. per cent sulphur or S 2 Cl 2 based on the blend and heating, at 330-445‹ F. in the case of sulphur, and at 180-280‹ F. in the case of S 2 Cl 2 , for 20 minutes to 10 hours and then blowing with a gas at 125-250‹ F. for at least 30 minutes to remove H 2 S 0À5-3 wt. per cent phosphorus in the form of a phosphorus sulphide may be added to the co-sulphurized blend and the blend then heated to 180-250‹ F. for at least 30 min. Suitable triglycerides are menhaden, whale (not sperm) soybean, cottonseed, safflower, linseed, rapeseed, sunflower, peanut and lard oils. The co-sulphurized blend may be used as a fraction modifier in a metal working fluid or an automatic transmission fluid based on a paraffinic lube. Other additives present may be zinc dialkyldithiophosphonate, 4,4<SP>1</SP> - methylene - bis - (2,6 - tert - butylphenol), Ba phosphonate overbased Ba sulphonate and hydrogenated naphthenic lube oil.
