Abstract

1388649 Resin-fibreglass grating M & M INTERNATIONAL PLASTICS Inc 30 Oct 1973 50343/73 Heading D1R Apparatus for making a resin-fibreglass grating comprises a form 15 provided with one set of spaced parallel open-ended slots 17 and a second set of spaced parallel open-ended slots 18 at an angle, preferably 90‹, to slots 17, a first laying arm 19 rotatable about its pivot 20 in a direction parallel to slots 17, a second laying arm 22 rotatable about pivots 23 and projectable and retractable horizontal detents 37 engageable by the strands 12, (13, Fig. 6 not shown) to facilitate their deposition. The arms contain apertures 21, 24 aligned with the slots through which strands 12, (13) are fed from reels mounted above the arms. Preferably baths (39, 40, Figs. 7, 8 not shown) are interposed between the reels and the laying arms to coat the threads before they are laid. Alternatively the -threads may be laid without resin and the grating impregnated in the mould. From the position shown fluid cylinder 25 swings arm 19 through 180‹ thereby laying threads 12 in slots 17. Bars 31' at the left hand end of slots 17 are slid by fluid activators 38 so that detents (37', Fig. 4, not shown) extend across the slots in the way that detents 37 are shown closing slots 18. Arm 19 is swung back, thereby laying a second array of threads 12 which are held down by extending the right hand side detents (37'). Arm 22 is then energised to deposit two successive stretches of strands (13) in slots 18 thereby completing one cycle of operations. The grating is transferred to the heated mould of a press for compression and curing. It is ejected from the form 15 by a grid (47, Fig. 4, not shown) normally flush with the bottom of slots 17, 18. In the embodiment of Fig. 8 (not shown) the grating is ejected, received by a transfer device (49) similar to form 15 but mounted upside down, the device (49) is moved to a position above the mould and the grating is ejected. In the embodiment of Fig. 9 (not shown) form 15 is hinged to enable it to be inverted prior to ejecting the grating.
