Abstract
1388530 Melting and refining glass CORNING GLASS WORKS 19 July 1973 [20 July 1972] 34570/73 Heading C1M A furnace as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 for melting and refining glass, including a tank, batch feeder means for supplying batch to an upper part of said tank, and a bottom provided with outlet means 40 for said molten and refined glass disposed at the lower end of said tank, is characterized by the outlet means being in the form of a duct 42 in contact with a portion of at least the upper surface 48 of the tank bottom 24 extending from the vicinity of the geometrical centre 64 of the bottom to the outer surface of the side of the tank 12 not below the lower surface of the tank bottom and having an inlet 44 in the vicinity of said geometrical centre and an exit 46 at the side outer surface. The duct may be made of refractory material, e.g. abutting refractory blocks. In a preferred embodiment, (Fig. 5), conduit 42a is made up of a plurality of abutting and formed refractory blocks 58 that actually constitute a part of tank bottom wall 24. Conduit 42a is lined with a metal duct 62, preferably of platinum, and its inlet 44a is not directly at the centre of the tank bottom wall. Duct 42a is also at an angle with respect to surfaces 48 and 52. In the vicinity of the geometrical centre there is located a drain 54. Alternatively, the duct may be formed solely of metal.
