Abstract

1388378 Continuous casting ALCAN RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Ltd 15 Feb 1972 [16 Feb 1971 3 Feb 1972] 43262/74 and 43265/74 Divided out of 1387992 Heading B3F [Also in Division H1] Metal such as Al or Zn is cast as a continuous strip between moving belts 15 cooled at their reverse faces where there are spaced belt supports and magnetic force is applied to at least one of said belts by a plurality of spaced belt supports to hold the belt against the supports, the magnetic force being related to the support spacing and belt thickness to constrain the belt against buckling. The spacing between supports is less than 50 times the thickness of the belts. In apparatus like that described in the parent Specification, the pressure in the inlet plenum chamber is greater (instead of less) than atmospheric and the support bars 36 or rotatable elements are magnetic or magnetizable. Alternatively, instead of a casing (26) as in the parent Specification, a shoe guides the belt 15 at the mould space. It comprises an array 116 of laminar polepieces 121 (separated by aluminium spacers 122 to leave cooling-water channels 123) backed by laminated permanent magnets 117. Hot water may be circulated behind the margins of the belt 15 not heated by the cast metal, i.e. outwardly of the edge dams (22). The polepieces 121 and channels 123 may be transverse of the belt and, instead of channels 123, there may be water channels formed by grooves in the sides of plates and spacers 121, 122.
