Abstract

1388277 Glass ceramics OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 30 March 1972 [2 April 1971] 14963/72 Heading C1M [Also in Divisions H4 and H1] An acousto-optical device comprises a transparent, at least partly crystalline, glass-ceramic body, the crystals of which have a maximum lineal dimension not greater than 2 microns. Preferably the glass-ceramic has a refractive index of at least 1À7 and a maximum crystal diameter of 1/3 micron. Suitable compositions mentioned are those containing lithia, alumina and silica as main components with one or more nucleating agents, and compositions of the alkali metal oxide-(Nb 2 O 5 , Ta 2 O 5 )-SiO 2 type wherein the alkali metal oxide is Na 2 O, Li 2 O or K 2 O or combinations of these oxides. A specific example contains SiO 2 (55 mole per cent), Nb 2 O 5 (25 mole per cent) and K 2 O (20 mole per cent). Glass of this composition is crystallized by heating for 2 hours at 1300‹ F. then for ¢ hour at 1500‹ F., and then allowing it to cool at furnace rate. Acoustic attenuation may be reduced by substitution of the alkali metal oxides by BaO, TiO 2 or Bi 2 O 3 .
