Abstract

1388170 Dialysis system MILTON ROY CO 20 Nov 1972 [6 Dec 1971] 53535/72 Heading B1X A dialysis fluid supply system for a dialyzer 24 having a membrane, blood ports for passage of blood through the dialyzer on one side of the membrane, and dialysis ports for passage of dialysis fluid through the dialyzer on the other side of the membrane, comprises a source of dialysis fluid, a head vessel 17, the source of dialysis fluid being connected to continuously supply dialysis fluid to the head vessel, the head vessel having a supply outlet 23 connected to one of the dialysis ports, a standpipe 25 within the head vessel, the standpipe having an open end below the top of the head vessel, the standpipe having an overflow outlet 32 through which dialysis fluid flows when the fluid in the head vessel rises above the open end of the standpipe and flows into the standpipe, a monitor 28 for monitoring at least one of the critical parameters of the dialysis fluid e.g. its conductivity, the monitor being connected in the fluid path between the said supply outlet and the said one dialysis port, and a return line 31, coupled at one end thereof to the fluid path between the monitor and dialysis ports, and extending vertically into the standpipe, the other end thereof terminating above the overflow outlet and below the top of the standpipe so that at least a portion of the dialysis fluid flows through the monitor, return line and overflow outlet when fluid flow from the supply outlet to the dialysis port is interrupted. In the illustrated embodiment the supply means includes a proportionating pump 13 and a bypass 18 so that water at a reduced rate may be supplied to the heater for stabilisation when the pump is not operating. The pump 33 which draws dialysis fluid through the system is preferably a positive displacement variable speed pump.
