Abstract

1388129 Electro-medical apparatus HEWLETT-PACKARD CO 15 March 1972 [19 April 1971] 12143/72 Heading G1N Repetitive sounds in the cardiovascular system are analyzed by synchronizing detected sound signals with a periodic condition that is synchronous with the repeated sounds, averaging a plurality of sounds signals over a plurality of successive time periods to obtain a signal representing an average of the amplitudes of the sound signals, and displaying this signal. As shown, a microphone 11 placed over the heart of a body 12 detects heart beating, the amplified and filtered sound signals being applied to a demodulator 16 which provides an evelope of the high frequency signals passed by the filter 14. The output of the demodulater is applied to an averager 17 which is synchronized by the ECG signal of the patient. The signals are averaged over 2<SP>6</SP> ECG time periods, for example, and the output of the averager is displayed at 21. Various sounds produced in the cardiovascular system can be analyzed to investigate various conditions (list given in the Specification) including blood pressure and blood flow rate. When there is no built-in synchronizing signal such as the ECG, e.g. when investigating venous stenosis, cyclic venous flow rates may be produced artificially by mechanical means that repetitiously constrict the vein. The averager is then synchronized by the mechanical means.
