Abstract

1387798 Trailers with suspended loads HULETTS SUGAR Ltd 25 April 1973 [3 May 1972 9 March 1973] 19731/73 Heading B7B A tractor-trailer combination includes a trailer 12 in the form of an inverted U extending in the longitudinal direction of the trailer and means to hoist a suspended load, especially an I.S.O. container 16, and hold it in position against the horizontal portion of the inverted U, the rear of the trailer being provided with a substantially vertically retractable transverse means to permit slewing of the trailer about its fifth wheel connection to the tractor. The trailer comprises a U-shaped frame having main horizontal beams 14 for supporting the container 16. Transverse wheels 18 are vertically retractable, the rear wheels of the trailer 12 being lifted off the ground by lowering the wheels 18 so that the trailer can be slewed about the fifth wheel 11. A sub-frame 20 is in the form of a cross and has a twistlock 22 at each extremity operated by an hydraulic ram 26 through linkages (not shown). The twistlocks secure a rope to the container, while hoisting is achieved by rams (28), Fig. 5 (not shown), through compensating links (30) attached to ropes (32) passing over pulleys (34) and secured to the twistlocks (22). The container is clamped in position by a wedge (40). In another embodiment, Figs. 6 to 8 (not shown), the rear wheels are lifted clear of the ground by rams (53, 54) while a slewing ram (55) swings the trailer sideways and the rear wheels are then lowered such that by repeating the process "walking" of the vehicle is effected.
