Abstract

1387737 Continuous production of vinylidene fluoride KALI-CHEMIE AG 15 Sept 1972 [15 Sept 1971] 42939/72 Heading C2C Vinylidene fluoride is obtained by a continuous process comprising two separate, parallel stages wherein in one stage 1,1-difluoroethane is chlorinated to 1,1,1-chlorodifluoroethane and in the second stage 1,1,1-chlorodifluoroethane is pyrolysed to give vinylidene fluoride, the reaction products from the two stages are combined, hydrogen halides formed and excess chlorine are removed to give a mixture of halogenated hydrocarbons, and vinylidene fluoride, 1,1,1-chlorodifluoroethane and any unreacted 1,1-difluoroethane are separated from the mixture, and the separated 1,1,1-chlorodifluoroethane is delivered to the pyrolysis stage, any separated 1,1-difluoroethane being delivered to the chlorination stage. Preferably complete chlorination is effected in the first stage in a photochlorination reactor and the second stage pyrolysis is effected in a nickel tube.
