Abstract

1387622 Winding, unwinding, splicing webs KODAK Ltd 17 April 1972 [15 April 1971] 9592/71 Heading B8R In a machine for winding, in succession, on to a spool 10 a length of paper web 23, a length of photographic film 42 and a further length of paper web 23, a cutting and splicing station 20 is provided for cutting the web or film after a desired length has been wound and splicing it to the succeeding web or film to be wound, means e.g. a reciprocable carriage 51, serving to retract the film 42 from said station whilst a paper web 23 is being cut and to thereafter overlap the cut web and the film to facilitate splicing thereof. A rotatable cam shaft (72), Fig. 4 (not shown), which trips microswitches (74) controlling valves in a pneumatic actuating circuit controls operation of a rotatable mandrel 66 for receiving the spool 10, web and film supply means, the cutting and splicing means 20 and the retracting means. The paper web 23 is supplied from a roll 24 via a roll spindle tensioning device 25 to pinch rollers (34) (35), Fig. 3 (not shown), which pull the web past braking rollers (36) (37) and feed it into a slot in the spool 10, the web being provided with tapered portions spaced along its length to fit this slot. The spool is positioned between axially movable mandrel members 66 by a load arm 68. A guide (64) is then pivoted to temporarily hold the web against the spool which is then rotated. The next taper on the feeding web 23 is sensed by microswitches 27, 31 which stop the winding operation so that the web is correctly positioned beneath a knife 52 at the cutting and splicing station. The film is supplied from a roll 41 via a tensioning device 44 to a vacuum feed drum 46 at which photographic frame numbers may be exposed on to the film edges by a printer 47. The film 42 then passes over the carriage 51 on which it is temporarily held by eccentric discs 53. This carriage is retracted to move the film 42 from knife 52 while it descends to sever the paper web then the carriage is advanced so that the film overlaps the cut web, a blower 89 lifting the web to assist in the overlapping. Next a paster tape held on a suction arm 62 is applied to the overlap to splice web to film, the tape, fed from a roll 58 by a reciprocable carriage 60, being cut by a knife 61 and held on the arm 6 until required. Winding is then continued until a desired length of film has been wound, e.g. as sensed by an unspecified measuring device, a further cutting and splicing operation then being carried out to splice a final length of web to the film. Finally this web is wound on to the spool 10, the remainder being cut off at the next taper point. The spool is then removed by an unload arm 69. A further tape is applied manually to keep the roll lightly wound on the spool. Sensors may detect any malfunction of the machine and halt its operation.
