Abstract
1387560 Zinc primary cell CARBONE CORP 16 July 1973 33720/73 Heading H1B A zinc electrode 14 immersed in an electrolyte 12 is provided at three locations 17 with means that indicate that the electrode has been consumed to a certain extent and will shortly need to be replaced. Each indicator comprises a recess 9 in the electrode extending a certain depth so that a desired thickness of zinc overlies the end of the recess, the recess receiving a dye 18 in liquid or powder form and aluminium powder 20 and being closed by an inert plug 31, e.g. of pitch. When the zinc is consumed to expose the recess 9 the dye 18 is released into the electrolyte and the aluminium powder 20 reacts vigorously with the electrolyte to ensure that the dye adequately mixes to discolour the electrolyte. The electrolyte is observed by removing a cap 11. In another embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown), the aluminium powder is replaced by NaOH or KOH in powder form and this powder together with the dye powder is ejected by a spring contained in the recess 9 when the zinc closing the end of the recess has been consumed. When the electrolyte is KOH a suitable dye is tropaelin-0 or fluorescein.
