Abstract
1387543 Power steering mechanism COMMERCIAL SHEARING Inc 14 June 1973 [14 June 1972] 28407/73 Heading B7H [Also in Division F2] A directional flow control valve arrangement for selectively operating a first fluid motor in two directions at a controlled speed includes overflow valve means controlling flow to a second fluid motor. The arrangement may be applied to a vehicle in which the first motor controls steering and the second a loading bucket. The arrangement comprises a valve housing 10 having a bore 11 containing a directional control spool 12 and bores 32, 33 containing spools 33, 43 respectively. The housing includes inlet chambers 19, 20 supplied by a pump 29, ports 15, 16 leading to opposite sides of the steering motor, exhaust ports 13, 14 and an overflow outlet 44 leading to the bucket motor. In the neutral position shown, of directional spool 12, fluid pumped to inlet chambers 19, 20 flows around spool 33 which is biased to the right by spring 35 and thence causes spool 43 to move rightwards against spring 45 and open bucket outlet 44. The latter thus receives the total output of pump 29. When spool 12 is indexed rightwards the chamber 17 adjacent spool 33 communicates via chamber 21 and non-return valve 21c within spool 12 with steering outlet 15. Simultaneously chamber 17 communicates via spool passages 23, 25 with passages 36, 46 leading respectively to the backs of spools 33, 43. Thus spool 43 moves leftwards to reduce the flow through bucket outlet 44, whereas spool 33 moves leftwards to connect inlet chambers 19, 20 with chamber 17 and steering outlet 15. Any tendency of the external pressure to vary the amount of fluid directed through outlet 15 will be automatically compensated by movement of spool 33. Flow of fluid through outlet 16 for steering in the opposite direction is effected in similar manner by indexing spool 12 to the left. The arrangement thus ensures that steering flow is given priority over bucket flow. In the event of malfunction of either of spools 33 or 43, spool 12 can be shifted in either direction to an extreme position beyond that normally required for metered control and in which port 30 is blocked and all fluid pumped to chamber 19 flows directly to chamber 17 for steering control. In this state spool 33 assumes its rightwards position and acts as a non-return valve preventing backflow of fluid through port 37. The bucket flow leaving outlet 44 may be supplemented by flow from an additional pump (52, Fig. 2, not shown).
