Abstract

1387454 Forms of wood; laminates BAYER AG 1 March 1972 [2 March 1971] 9531/72 Headings B5L and B5N [Also in Divisions C3 and D1] Lignocellulose-containing material is produced by bonding or impregnating lignocellulose with a mixture of aromatic polyisocyanates containing 15-35% by weight of isocyanate groups, the mixture comprising from 5-100% by weight of the residue which is obtained from the distillation under mild conditions (e.g. 100‹-160‹ C.) of a crude tolylene diisocyanate isomer mixture. This residue has a maximum carbodiimide group content of 1À4% by weight, and an average molecular weight of less than 1000 when mixed with 20% by weight of pure tolylene diisocyanate. The crude isomer mixture is that obtained from the reaction of isomeric mixtures of diaminotoluene with phosgene. The residue may be mixed with other aromatic polyisocyanates, e.g. 2,4- or 2,6-diisocyanatotoluene, 4,4-diisocyano-diphenyl methane or a polyphenylpolymethylene polyisocyanate and may be dissolved in an inert solvent, e.g. a hydrocarbon, ketone, ester nitrile, substituted acid amide, sulphone or sulphoxide. In Example 8, beech veneers are sprayed on all sides with a solution of the residue, polyphenylpolymethylene polyisocyanate, acetone and dimethylformamide. After evaporation of the solvent, 5 veneers are stacked on top of each other with the fibres in adjacent layers rotated through 90 degrees with respect to each other. The stack is united into a veneer panel by heat and pressure. In Example 9 birch veneers are treated on both sides with a solution of a similar residue and the same additives as in Example 8, the solution being applied by rollers. After evaporation of the solvent, the rolled veneers stacked together with untreated birch veneers and united into a panel by heat and pressure. In Example 12, mosaic parquetry bars which have been impregnated with a solution of the residue and polyphenylpolymethylene polyisocyanate in an inert solvent mixture are bonded to a chip panel made according to one of Examples 7-7 (see Division C3) by means of a polyurethane adhesive.
