Abstract

1387389 Liquid crystal compositions NCR CORP 2 May 1973 [12 May 1972] 20835/73 Heading C4X [Also in Division B6] A security document, e.g. a banknote, passport, security pass or legal document, has capsules of at least 5 microns diameter containing liquid crystal material which undergoes a colour change when subjected to a change in external conditions, e.g. when heated above room temperature or viewed with low angle illumination. The capsules may be applied as a coating by a silk screening process, the coating including a polymeric binder. The liquid crystal material is preferably a mixture of cholesteric materials which enters the liquid crystalline phase with an associated colour change within the range 30-60‹ C. The mixture may include antioxidants, e.g. butylated hydroxyanisole azoxydianisole, butylated hydroxytoluene, dilauryl thiodipropionate or Vitamin E, and U.V. light stabilizers. The document may have a coloured background such as to render the coating inconspicuous. The coating may be transparent at room temperature.
