Abstract

1387062 Spray drying apparatus W R GRACE & CO 18 April 1972 [3 May 1971] 17790/72 Heading BIB [Also in Division C6] Apparatus for crystallizing sucrose comprises a drying chamber 24 to which heated sucrose syrup is fed by an atomiser 10 and heated air and recycled solids are supplied through an annulus 5 to a centrifugal disperser 16 which produces a solids-bearing atmosphere 17 surrounding the solution droplets. Dried solids leaving the chamber at 11 pass through a hopper 12 and feeder 13 to a pneumatic conveyer 14 by which they are recycled through a grinder (not shown). Product surplus, to recycling requirements overflows the hopper and is conveyed to storage and packaging by a line 25. Gases withdrawn from the chamber through a line 18 and exhaust fan 22 pass through a cyclone separator 19 from which solids are recycled by a line 20. In a modification, heated air and syrup are delivered to a centrifugal atomiser corresponding to the disperser 16 and the recycled product is introduced through tangential openings at the top of the chamber 24.
