Abstract

1386852 Electrostatic powder spraying RANSBURG CORP 22 March 1972 [22 March 1971] 13498/72 Headings B2F and B2L In a.powder spraying apparatus, powder entrained in air is supplied to an orifice 47, Fig. 2, in a disc assembly 10 and is deflected by deflectors 39, 40 into chamber 49, air being supplied via a passage 66, a plenum 67 and tangentially directed apertures 50, 52 to produce a swirling motion of the material in the chamber 49, from which it flows between deflector 41 and disc 15 whose edge 58 is earthed or electrostatically charged, the flow of material towards the edge 58 causing aspiration of air through an aperture 59 to assist the spraying. The width of the slot 81 between the disc 15 and the deflector 41 can be varied by adjustment of screws 69 acting through plastics spacers 82. The disc assembly 10 may be rotated. The edge 58 is electrostatically charged via a cable 25, safety resistor 80, conductive path 27 and a conductive coating 43, 65. The powder is fed from a fluidised bed 19, Fig. 1, by a venturi pump 17 and conduit 21. The bed 19 at its bottom includes a foraminous sheet through which air is blown upwardly. The articles 13 travel in a circular or "omega" shaped path around the disc assembly 10 which may be reciprocated by means 14. Air is supplied to the Venturi pump 17 via a hose 35, a pressure regulating valve 34, a solenoid valve 85 and a hose 32. Excess powder is collected in a filter-separator 72 below an inclined floor 73. In a modification, Fig. 4, the articles 13 are suspended within a cylindrical enclosure 70 at the bottom of which is located a foraminous grill 78 supported by an inverted conical member 79 which directs excess powder to a filter separator 72.
