Abstract

1386623 Metallic oxides and chlorides LARCO SOC MINIERE ET METALLURGIQUE DE LARYMNA SA 9 Feb 1972 [11 Feb 1971] 6109/72 Heading ClA A method of production, in very pure form, of the oxides and/or chlorides of metals of the group comprising Cr, Co, Cu, Pb, Fe, Ni, Mo, V, W and Zu or production of the metals themselves, from alloys or scrap metal containing at least two of the above mentioned metals comprises the following steps in a closed cycle process: (i) a chlorination step at a temperature between 250‹ and 1250‹ C., depending on the metals in the charge, to produce gaseous metal chlorides, by reaction with chlorine gas; (ii) a condensation step to separate out one or more of the volatilized chlorides; (iii) an oxidation step to produce the oxide by reaction with an oxygen containing gas; (iv) a reduction step to produce the pure metals by reacting the oxides with a carbon monoxide containing gas. In the apparatus shown, alloy or scrap admixed with about 20% of its weight of coke is supplied through a pipe 2 into an externally cooled chlorination chamber 1. Chlorination gases enter through a pipe 5 and gaseous phase chlorides entrained in chlorine &c. pass through a pipe 6 to condensation cells 8a ... 8n operating at respectively decreasing temperatures to remove individual chlorides. Each chloride passes through respective pipes 11a, 11b &c., which have branches 33a, 33b &c. for the removal of some of the chloride as a product if required, into chambers 16a, 16b &c. wherefrom high pressure oxygen blows it into respective oxidizing chambers 15a, 15b &c. which surmount separators 18a, 18b &c. wherein the resulting oxides collect. Each of the separators can be connected to reducing chambers 24a, 24b &c. wherein the oxides are contacted with a high pressure reducing gas, e.g. Co, the resulting metallic powders being collected in hoppers 26a, 26b &c.
