1386594 Dehydrohalogenation reactions DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 15 Feb 1972 [22 Feb 1971] 5078/71 Heading C2C The invention comprises (a) a process for the intermolecular dehydrohalogenation of a first compound (R<SP>1</SP>-H) containing an active hydrogenation (H) and a second compound (R<SP>2</SP>-X) containing a halogen atom (X) to form a condensation product (R<SP>1</SP>-R<SP>2</SP>) wherein a solution of the said first and second compounds is contacted with a combination of a powdered alkali and a powdered absorbent as hereinafter defined and eluting the desired product with an eluting agent and (b) a process for the intramolecular dehydrohalogenation of a halohydrin to form an epoxy compound wherein a solution of the halohydrin is contacted with a combination of a powdered alkali and a powdered absorbent, as hereinafter defined and eluting the desired product with an eluting agent. By absorbent is meant alumina, silica gel, magnesia or an ion exchange resin. The combination of alkali and the absorbent may be an intimate mixture or alternative layers of alkali and absorbent. A typical reaction of process (a) is the reaction between an aromatic amine and an aryl halide to form a diphenylamine derivative.
