Abstract

1386480 Deflecting propulsion jets BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 13 June 1973 [8 July 1972] 32088/72 Heading B7G A guided missile 2 has a jet pipe 1 encircled at its rear extremity by a part-spherical ring 14 spaced by an annular passage 15 from a partspherical extension 13 of a swivellable propulsion nozzle 10 having a throat 11 of smaller diameter than the jet pipe. The outer surface of extension 13 seats against a seal 9 formed in the inwardly turned end 6 of the missile body, within which is housed an annular member 3 formed with four equi-spaced cylindrical bores 4 housing pistons 19 connected by rods 18 to an annular flange 17 on extension 13. The open end of each cylinder is in direct communication with the space 16 within the missile body and the closed end is in communication therewith through a duct 23. The closed end of each cylinder is formed with a port 20 which is normally closed by a solenoid operated valve 22 and when the motor is run gas from jet pipe 1 is deflected by throat 11 through passage 15 into the space 16 so that a uniform pressure is applied to both faces of the pistons, the pressure on the connecting-rod-side of each piston being approximately twice the pressure on the other side, thereby relieving the load on a seal 8. Operation of a selected solenoid operated valve(s) will cause the corresponding piston(s) to be urged into the cylinder(s) with resulting deflection of nozzle 13.
