Abstract

1386167 Turrets; machine tool details WARNER & SWASEY CO 26 May 1972 [1 June 1971] 25010/72 Headings B3B and B3T A machine tool comprises a bed 20, a spindle housing 21 including a spindle and chuck 11a for supporting and rotating a workpiece, a carrier 40 supporting a turret support bar 41 parallel to the spindle, ways 30, 31 supporting the carrier 40 for movement transverse to the spindle axis, an indexable tool support turret 12 mounted on said turret support bar 41 and including a plurality of tool supporting faces 12a, bearing means supporting said bar 41 for rotation and axial movement, and means 71 for moving the carrier 40 towards and away from the spindle axis. The tool support turret 12 is supported on the carrier 40 for indexing tools to a workpiece machining position, for advance movement relative to the carrier from a retracted position wherein the turret projects outwardly of the carrier towards the chuck in a work stroke parallel to the spindle axis, and for return movement towards the retracted position, the tool support turret being movable towards the carrier from the retracted position to a maximum advanced position which defines the maximum work stroke of the tool support turret 12. The moving means comprises lead screws and ball nuts, and incremental pulse generators or position encoders monitor the positions of the carrier 40 and turret 12 for a numerical control arrangement. Tools 13 can be mounted on the turret faces 12a in a number of positions so that tool cutting edges lie in a common plane to minimize stroke movements of the turret during a cutting operation.
