Abstract

1386127 Foundry moulding processes WHITE SEA & BALTIC CO Ltd 2 March 1973 [2 March 1972] 9831/72 Heading B3F [Also in Division C3] A method of making a foundry mould or core comprises forming a mixture of foundry sand, an aqueous resin composition, a catalyst for the resin, and a silane, these components being brought together continuously and simultaneously, putting the mixture into a mould or core box and allowing it to harden. The method is preferably carried out by feeding the foundry sand continuously to a mixer, feeding the catalyst continuously to the mixer at a point beyond where the sand is fed in and, at a point beyond where the catalyst is fed in, continuously feeding a mixture of the aqueous resin-containing composition, this mixture being formed by continuously feeding the silane into a stream of the resin-containing composition being continuously fed to the mixer. A foaming agent may be included in the mixture and the mixing so carried out that the aqueous phase is foamed thereby rendering the mixture fluid. In a modification the catalyst is omitted in forming the mixture, but catalyst in gaseous form, e.g. hydrogen chloride gas, is passed through the mixture in the mould or core box, the mixture then being allowed to harden. In this embodiment the sand may be fed continuously to a mixer and, at a point beyond that where the sand is fed in, a mixture of the resin composition and silane is fed in, this mixture being formed by continuously feeding the silane into a stream of the resin composition being continuously fed to the mixer. In this modification also a foaming agent may be included in the mixture. The mixture may be continuously removed from the mixer and supplied direct to a core box. A particular continuous mixer used comprises a horizontal tube within which is a rotatable blade.
