Abstract

1385856 Incinerator SOGEBRE 16 May 1973 [26 May 1972 26 Feb 1973] 23282/73 Heading F4B A refuse incinerator comprises a truncated, conical drum 1 oscillating about an axis slightly inclined to the horizontal between a fixed charging compartment 20 and a fixed ash compartment 3, the drum having an internal casing at least partly polygonal in section forming a number of independent air passages 13 delivering air to the combustion chamber, and a distributor to permit passage of air only into the lower portion of the combustion chamber. The curved part of a semi-hexagonal combustion chamber forms an arch 9 to reflect heat from the refuse, and nozzles 15 introduce air into the refuse. A distributor 52, Fig. 6, allows air to pass only through these holes 51 in the casing 8 of the drum which are at the lowest part. A hit and miss damper 53, 57 controls the amount of air supplied. The drum oscillates only sufficiently to allow the flat sections to be lowermost in turn. In a modification for burning waste liquids, the curved portion of the combustion chamber is lowermost, Fig. 9, and the air is fed only through nozzles 15 directly substantially horizontally. The nozzles 15 which are not in use are retracted, and amount of air supplied is regulated by turning the nozzles 15 so that the inlet hole 15c faces into or away from the flow of air in the passage 13. The combustion air is heated by passing down a sleeve surrounding a flue stack at the charging end, and is delivered through a casing 36, Fig. 3, housing a labyrinth seal between the fixed charging compartment and the drum. A burner 31 is mounted in the end wall of the ash box which has a labyrinth seal 34 between it and the drum.
