Abstract

1385781 Melt polymerising methylphthalic acids TEIJIN Ltd 1 May 1972 20126/72 Heading C3R A process for producing a polyamide comprises melt polymerizing (a) 85 to 100 mol per cent of methyl terephthalic and/or methylisophthalic acid, together with a substantially equimolar amount of diamine and (b) 15 to 0 mol per cent of comonomers in the presence of at least 0À1 mol per cent of a reducing phosphorus acid or an ester or salt thereof. Specified P acids have the formula H.PO.(OH) n R m where R is H, C 1-15 alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or acyl; m is 0 or 1 and m + n = 2. The comonomer is a different diacid plus diamine, aminoacid, lactam or mixture thereof. Numerous suitable P acids and monomers are specified. The presence of the specified P compound is stated to prevent the gellation which normally occurs when melt polymerizing monomers (a). There are 24 examples including comparative examples using other P compounds.
