Abstract

1385617 Boots &c J J GLANCY 4 May 1973 21313/73 Heading A3B A device 14 which allows limited rotation of the foot about a vertical axis when the foot is in contact with the ground (e.g. for orthotic or prosthetic patients) includes a mount 15 which is fixed to the sole 13 of a shoe, a ground engaging plate 24 which is rotatably mounted by a bearing on the mount 15, first and second stops on either the mount 15 or the plate 24, a projection fixed to the plate 24 or mount 15 and movable between the first and second stops and a spring which normally urges the projection against the first stop but which is yieldable to alow the projection to abut the second stop as the plate 24 rotates with respect to the mount 15. In a first embodiment (Fig. 2) the mount 15 is formed with a projection 33 and the plate 24 is formed with a raised portion 25 having a recess 27, the walls 28, 29 of the recess 27 forming the first and second stops. The raised portion 25 is also formed with channels 31A, 31B in one of which is mounted a spring 32. The plate 24 is rotatably mounted on the mount 15 by means of a thrust bearing 21 and race plates 20, 23 and is retained in position by a screw 26. In use, if the spring 32 is located in channel 31A, the spring 32 urges face 34 of projection 33 into contact with wall 29 of recess 27 but permits rotation of the plate 24 until face 35 of projection 33 engages wall 28 or recess 27. When the foot is lifted from the ground the spring 32 returns the plate 24 to its original position. If the spring 32 is located in the recess 31B the plate 24 is allowed to rotate in the opposite direction. In a second embodiment (not shown) the projection 33 is formed as the plate 24 and the recess 27 and channels 31A, 31B are formed on the mount 15.
