1385478 Acrylonitrile rubber-phenolated formaldehyde-hydrocarbon resin compositions COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 15 Sept 1972 [23 Sept 1971] 44514/71 Headings C3P and C3R A composition comprises an unvulcanized acrylonitrile copolymer rubber and a phenolated formaldehyde-polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon resin. A reinforced rubber may be obtained by compounding the composition with a vulcanizing agent and formaldehyde or a formaldehyde donor such as hexamethylene tetramine, and optionally other conventional rubber additives, and heating to vulcanize the rubber and cure the resin simultaneously. The resin may be prepared by reacting a hydrocarbon such as naphthalene with paraformaldehyde in the presence of an acid to give a product preferably having an oxygen content of 4-10% and a molecular weight of 400-800 and reacting this with a phenol, preferably in a ratio of at least 1À5 mole of phenol per mole of resin, in the presence of an acid such as p-toluenesulphonic acid. The rubber may be an acrylonitrilebutadiene or -isoprene copolymer. Exemplified compositions contain hexamethylene tetramine, di-α-cumyl peroxide or sulphur and 2-mercaptobenzthiazole and/or tetramethylthiuram disulphide, and other additives selected from zinc oxide, stearic acid, carbon black, triethanolamine, N,N<SP>1</SP>-diphenylguanidine and N-phenyl- α-naphthylamine.
