Abstract

1385100 Smoke extraction system PRODUCTIONS ESSEMES SA 31 Aug 1972 [31 Aug 1971] 40407/72 Heading ASA Smoke is extracted from a multi-storey building in the event of fire by means of chimney 3 separated from each storey by fireproof wall 8, a trap door 7 in the upper part of each storey co-operating with an opening 2 in the wall, and being surrounded by a frame 10 having a lower surface 13a inclined towards the interior of the storey and abutting a correspondingly inclined surface 21 of the trap door. As shown in Figs: 2, 3, opening 2 is surrounded by peripheral groove 9 in which is located frame 10 constituted by uprights 11 and 12 and upper and lower cross-pieces 14, 13, each in the shape of a right-angled trapezium. Side 13a of 13 slopes downwardly from opening 2 at a steeper angle than does side 14a of 14. Heat insulating, fire-resistant blocks 16 fill the gap between the back of frame 10 and the back of groove 9. The trap door consists of panel 17 comprising opposing plates 18, 19 enclosing web 20 of calcined rock, alveolate concrete or ceramic fibre. At least plate 19 is of heat-insulating material. The periphery of panel 17 is encased in metal frame 12 flanged at 22, 23, flange 22 trapping between itself and blocks 16 heat insulating plug 24. A similar plug or joint 26 fills the gap 25 between frame 21 and frame 10 and ensures tight closing. Panel 17 is normally retained in frame 10 by locks 27, 28 on uprights 11, 12, each lock comprising a bolt retractable from a boltclasp on panel 17 by the action of an electromagnet. The bolt and/or clasp may be of low-melting material to ensure release of the panel should the magnet fail. On remote operation of the magnet the panel slides from the frame under gravity in the direction f 2 . The panel may be provided with a stop consisting of piston/cable arrangement 34/35 in bore 33 in web 20 to prevent it from falling totally from the opening. Figs. 6 and 7 show an alternative construction of panel and frame and a different stop arrangement.
