Abstract
1385002 Alkyl carbonates SOC NATIONALE DES POUDRES ET EXPLOSIFS 27 June 1973 [13 July 1972] 30480/73 Heading C2C Alkyl carbonates, R 1 O-CO-OR 2 in which R 1 and R 2 the same or different are alkyl groups 6-18 C, linear or branched at the α- or higher position, are prepared by reacting a chloroformate, R 1 OCOCl and an alcohol R2OH, in a liquid reaction medium consisting of an emulsion of two phases, the organic phase containing the chloroformate, alcohol and carbonate and the aqueous immiscible phase containing the inorganic products of the reaction. The water is added in portions to the chloroformate and alcohol and a temperature between the melting point of the alcohol and chloroformate and the boiling point of the aqueous phase is used. Examples describe the preparation of dihexyl, di-(2-ethylhexyl), dilauryl, and dioctadeoyl carbonates and the asymmetric octyl lauryl carbonate.
