Abstract

1384985 Aromatic copolyamides BAYER AG 16 May 1973 [19 May 1972] 23414/73 Heading C3R Aromatic copolyamides comprise 1 to 9À5 mol. per cent hydantoin-containing repeat units (I) and 99 to 90À5 non-hydantoin-containing repeat units (II) where X, Y, A, and A r <SP>1</SP> are aromatic radicals, Z is a single bond or -H y -X-, H y is and R 1 and R 2 are each H or optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl. They may be prepared by reacting the appropriate acid chloride or bromide and diamines interfacially or in a solvent to a relative viscosity of 1À2 to 2À5 (0À5 g./dl. in H 2 SO 4 /25‹ C.). The presence of the specified proportion of hydantoin containing units is said to result in high moisture-absorbing capacity polymers well suited for textile fibres. Numerous suitable diacids, diamines and solvents which may contain an alkali or alkaline earth metal halide are specified. The hydantoin-containing diamines may be obtained in accordance with Specification 1,223,457.
