Abstract

1384896 Cleaning pads P A BOULUS 25 Jan 1972 [3 Feb 1971] 3494/72 Heading A4F [Also in Division D1] A pad for the cleaning of an area of a covering textile material comprises a porous pad having deposited thereon a composition of a detergent, a volatile grease solvent, a water insoluble absorptive substance which is either solvent insoluble and pulverulent or solvent soluble and dissolved in the solvent and crystallizable therefrom in absorptive form as the solvent evaporates, and water and a covering of a vapour tight or substantially vapour tight material to hold the pad in place on the material. In use, the pad is placed in contact with the textile material to be cleaned for 3-36 hours, the covering ensuring vapour tightness. The pad and covering are then removed and the textile material vacuum cleaned when dry. After deposit on the pad the composition may be freeze dried and stored in a vapour-tight manner until required and then drenched with water prior to application to the textile material. The detergents may be anionic, cationic or ampholytic agents. The solvent may be Stoddard's solvent, perchloroethylene, carbon tetrachloride or fluorotrichloromethane. The absorptive substance may be calcite, magnesium silicate or montmorillonite clay. The composition may further comprise a builder. An exemplified composition comprises sodium lauryl sulphate, perchloroethylene, sodium hydroxide, precipitated calcium carbonate and water. The pad may be made of synthetic, animal, vegetable or mineral fibres, many of which are specified, or blends of these and may have 6 to 12 layers. The pad is covered by the vapour tight covering which may comprise a sheet of waxed paper or plastics and may be provided with an adhesive layer. Adhesive tape may be used to ensure vapour tightness. The pad and covering may be provided in continuous rolls for cleaning wall-to-wall and stairway carpets. Pads may be placed edge to edge to ensure uniform cleaning. Other items which may be cleaned include furniture fabrics, pillows, mattresses, drapes, walls and ceilings.
