Abstract

1384524 Reciprocating gas compressors GENERAL MOTORS CORP 4 May 1973 [18 May 1972 27 July 1972] 21301/73 Heading F1N [Also in Division F2] A reciprocating refrigerant compressor comprises two pairs of opposed mutally perpendicular co-planer cylinders 14, 16, and 18, 20 formed in a cylinder housing 12, an annular sheet metal closure member 34 surrounding the housing 12 and being sealed to the peripheries of the endwalls 22, 36 thereof thereby to enclose a discharge chamber 66 formed by the spaces between the cylinders, and a piston 110 reciprocable in each cylinder by a mechanism 44disposed in a sealed central suction cavity 46 in the housing 12. The input drive of the mechanism 44 is a shaft 124 rotatably mounted in needle bearings 128, 144 located, respectively, in the end-wall 22 and a tubular extension 150 welded to the domed endwall 146 of the closure 34. The shaft 124 has a central eccentric portion 136 on which is journalled a square slider block 120, each face of which is in sliding contact with a flat surface 116 on the rigid stem 114 of a respective piston 110. Opposite pistons 110 are joined together by one or other of two yokes 212, 214 fixed to the sides of the piston stems by screws 220, 224, 228 &c and provided with apertures 244 for accommodating movement of the eccentric 136. Balance weights 184, 194 are secured by screws 188, 198, to the webs, 138, 140 connecting the eccentric 136 to the journalled portions 126, 142 of the shaft, the latter portion being provided with a seal assembly 162. In operation suction gas enters the cavity 46 through an opening (48), Fig.7 (not shown), in the end-wall 22 and flows through apertures 250 in the pistons into the respective cylinders under the control of reed valves 248. From each cylinder the gas is discharged through openings 88, 90 in a plate 86 retained against a shoulder 87 formed in the cylinder end. Each plate is held by a domed member 98 having cutouts (100) round its periphery for the passage of gas into the chamber 66 via the clearance 62 between the annular closure 34 and the respective cylinder end. A rectangular or circular reed valve 96 whose movement is limited by a strip 106 or annulus (336), Fig.8 (not shown), controls flow through the openings 88. A second embodiment having a modified piston stem and yoke assembly and housing construction is described, Fig.8 (not shown).
