Abstract

1384474 Incinerators GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 5 Jan 1973 [19 Jan 1972] 693/73 Heading F4B An incinerator for waste materials has a horizontal cylindrical combustion chamber with an inlet duct 20 in the chamber wall for feeding in waste material and compressed air tangentially to the inside wall, thereby establishing a vortical movement of the waste material towards the exhust flue 50 in the other end wall 24, a burner 30 being provided for igniting the waste material, an outlet duct 58 near the exhaust flue allowing solid matter circulating with the vortex to leave the combustion chamber, and means are provided for applying cooling air to the inlet and outlet duets. A blower 40 is connected to a number of spaced inlets to provide secondary air for combustion. The cooling air for the duets 20 and 60 is taken from the same blower 40 via pipes 70, 80 controlled by valves 72, 82. The blower 40 also supplies air for the burner 30. A control unit 90 is connected to a temperature sensor 92 and with blowers 16 and 40, fuel supply valve 34 and cooling air control means 74, 84. To start up, the burner 30 is ignited by opening the fuel valve and starting blower 40. During the preheat period the control unit opens valves 72 and 82 to cool the inlet and exhaust ducts 20 and 60. When the sensor 92 indicates that the required temperature has been reached the control unit activates the blower 16 to feed air and waste material to the combustion chamber, shuts off the cooling air valves and shuts off the burner 30. If blower 16 fails the control unit automatically switches on the cooling air again to inlet duct 20. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown), a separate blower is provided connected to a duct surrounding exhaust duct 60 so as to provide cooling air for the exhaust flue. The blower is connected to a control for the valve 82 so that if it fails the valve opens to supply the cooling air. In similar form a fan is provided on the other side of the separator 62 to draw air into the duct surrounding the exhaust duct.
