Abstract

1384177 Reinforcing rock formations EXCHEM HOLDINGS Ltd 1 June 1973 [5 June 1972] 26102/72 Heading F2H A method of reinforcing a rock formation comprises drilling a borehole in the rock and inserting into it a reinforcing assembly, comprising. longitudinally extending part-annular segments 2 fixed in a longitudinally staggered relation about a coaxial inner tube 1 as the assembly is being inserted, until the leading end of the assembly reaches the inner end of the borehole and the rear end of the assembly lies adjacent the mouth of the borehole, feeding a bonding composition through the inner tube 1 so that it flows from the leading end of the assembly and fills the annular space between the assembly and the borehole wall, and allowing the composition to harden and bond the reinforcing assembly to the rock. The segments 2 may be of wood, metal, plastics, asbestos cement, or resinbonded glass fibre, and are glued to the inner tube 1, which may be of metal or plastics, e.g. high density polyethylene. A pointed tip section (Fig. 3, not shown) having ejection holes (3) along its sides may be fitted to the leading end of the reinforcing assembly. The bonding composition may be an unsaturated polyester resin with a benzoylperoxide/amine accelerator, with 50% by weight of inert filler and 1% of pyrogenic silica. In Fig. 1, segments 2 and a tube 1 are, e.g. 66 inches long and are assembled in a staggered manner to form a unit 72 inches long. The units are joined together by 8 inch lengths of high density polyethylene tube pushed over the joints and anchored with adhesive tape. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown) the inner tube is continuous, and is drawn from a coil, the segments being glued on one by one as the assembly is fed into the borehole.
