Abstract

1384121 Textured polypropylene yarn UNIROYAL Inc 28 Feb 1972 9098/72 Headings D1F and D1W A yarn, particularly for carpets or upholstery, comprises crystalline polypropylene filaments, in which the filaments have a random threedimensional crimp with at least 75% of the crimp having non-helical, rounded convolutions and with 6-20 crimps per inch, at least 80% of the filaments possessing substantially no plastic deformation along their lengths; and the yarn has a tenacity of less than 2.5 gms/ denier, a crimp permanence of 20-70 and a modulus retention of at least 30% above average at 8% elongation. The parameters 'crimp permanence', and 'modulus retention' are defined in the specification. Preferred values of the parameters are 9-15 crimps/inch; a tenacity between 0.8 and 2.25 gms/denier; and crimp permanence between 30 and 60. The polypropylene may contain such additives as stabilisers, plasticisers; flame retardants, and dye receptors such as polyamines, polyvinyl pyridines, polyamides, organic or inorganic pigments. A preferred process for producing the above yarn comprises spinning and cooling filaments of crystalline polypropylene, drawing the filaments at a ratio of less than 2.5:1, imparting a three-dimensional non-helical crimp e.g. as disclosed in Specification 1044697, removing the crimped filaments at minimum tension, and heat setting the crimp at a temperature in the range 250‹F-softening point of the filaments.
