Abstract

1383967 Emulsifiable unsaturated polyester resin compositions KAO ATLAS CO Ltd 19 April 1972 [22 April 1971] 18059/72 Heading C3P A composition which can be emulsified in water comprises 10-50 parts by weight of a vinyl or allyl or substituted vinyl or allyl compound and 100 parts by weight of and unsaturated polyester formed from 100 parts by weight in total of an unsaturated dibasic acid or anhydride, optionally a saturated dibasic acid or anhydride and a polyhydric alcohol reacted in the presence of 5-25 parts by weight of a polyoxyalkylene castor oil or a polyoxyalkylene hydrogenated castor oil. The unsaturated polyester is prepared by reacting the ingredients under nitrogen in the presence of an inhibitor such as hydroquinone and optionally an antifoaming agent. The resulting compound is dissolved in the vinyl or allyl compound, a catalyst is added and the solution is emulsified in water. The resulting stable emulsion may be used to impregnate glass fibre products. In examples the polyesters were formed from diethylene glycol, fumaric acid or maleic anhydride, optionally polyethylene glycol and poly oxyethylene castor oil or hydrogenated castor oil. These polyesters were dissolved in diallyl phthalate and benzoyl or lauroyl peroxide was added as catalyst. The solutions were emulsified in water, an alkylarylsulphonate isopropylamine salt being added in some cases to help stabilize the emulsion.
