Abstract

1383749 Finishing fabrics COLGATEPALMOLIVE CO 15 Oct 1971 [20 Oct 1970 (4)] 23367/74 Divided out of 1383748 Heading DIP [Also in Division B8] An article for finishing fabrics in an automatic laundry dryer comprises a form retaining base having a volume of at least 5c.c. and a finishing material on an external surface thereof or contained therein, which material is removable upon contact whilst tumbling with laundry in a damp and/or heated state and thereby transfers to the laundry, The base material may take the form of (1) a sphere, hemisphere a half cylinder slab, or a paper board cube or box coated with finishing material. The box may be coated with different materials on different faces thereof and the sphere may have a weight therein to increase density or (2) a hollow sphere, cylinder or ellipsoid having hole or holes therein for discharge of liquid finishing agent contained therein as a soution in a solvent e.g. alcohols, esters, aldehydes, ketones and water. The holes are such that the liquid only escapes by inertial discharge or capillary action when the article contacts the laundry. The base may be made of wood, synthetic plastics especially foamed plastics e.g. foamed polystyrene or polyurethane perforated or expanded metals, vermiculite, talc and rubbers. Specified finishing agents are softeners and antistatic agents e.g. alkylene glycol, glycerol or other polyol polymers and block copolymers and condensates thereof with fatty alcohols and fatty acids, higher fatty acid amides, water-soluble alkali metal, ammonium or magnesium, salts such as fatty alcohol sulphates and sulphonates, alkyl benzene sulphonates, fatty acid acyl taurides and irethionates, fatty acid monoglyceride sulphates, fatty acid sarcosides and glycines, stearates and laurates e.g. triethanol amine laurate, tetraalkylammonium salts e.g. halides, acetates; benzoates, saccharinates, alkosulphates and bisulphates and, trialkyl benzyl ammonium halides, alkyl pyridine, isoquinolinium and morpholinium salts, alkyl imidazolines e,g. 1-methyl-1-stearyl aminoethyl-2-stearyl imidazolinium methosulphate, higher alkyl amines or oxides thereof, and alkyl guanidine salts. The external coating may be a solid which softens or melts in the damp and/or heated dryer. Fabrics treated are composed of cotton, rayon, nylon and polyester. The hollow bases may contain sponge, paper or cloth to regulate release of finishing agent. The invention of Specification 1382431 which claims similar articles carrying either a C 8 -C 22 fatty acid C 1 -C 5 alkanol amide or a mixture of such amides or specified mixtures of conditioning agents, is disclaimed.
