Abstract

1383603 Machine tool control; automatic stop TRAUB GmbH 19 Oct 1972 [26 Nov 1971] 48118/72 Headings B3B and B3T [Also in Division F2] Fluid pressure operated apparatus for adjusting a tool slide of a machine tool, e.g. a lathe, in dependence upon the deviations of a dimension of a workpiece 2 previously machined on the machine tool from a reference dimension comprises, a measuring sensor 1 for determining the deviation of the workpiece, a screw spindle drive incrementally displacing the tool slide and operable in both directions of rotation through a releasable coupling 12 and a pivot mechanism 11, and pressure fluid control valves 4, 5 selectively controlled by a deviation responsive controller 3, 62, 63 to allow pressure fluid flow from a pressure source 6 to the drive 11 and coupling 12 for displacing the tool slide. The controller 3, 62, 63 classifies the dimension of the just machined workpiece 2 relative to the desired rating D. Measurements in C and E rate plus or minus one increment of adjustment of the screw spindle drive, those in B and F rate plus or minus two increments, and those in A and G automatically stop the lathe. A function controller 63 controls the valves 4, 5 accordingly. In the incremental rotary drive of the adjusting screw spindle 21 the coupling 12 includes fluid pressure operated radially movable members 30, 31 that engage on the inner surface of a drum which is attached to the screw spindle 21. The coupling members 30, 31 are mounted on a body attached to a pivot member 47 which is rocked by the fluid pressure operated drive 11. A throttle 10 in the supply lines 8, 9 ensure a delay between the operation of the coupling 12 and rocking drive 11 so that, depending on which is operated first, clockwise or anti-clockwise rotation of the screw spindle 21 is effected. Backlash in the spindle 21 drive is achieved by disc springs 23 and a disc 22 having radial indentations which engage a catch 25 to prevent rotation of the disc 22.
