Abstract

1383296 Electric couplings PLESSEY CO Ltd 18 Sept 1972 [7 Oct 1971 8 Feb 1972] 46621/71 and 5690/72 Heading H2E The contacts of a multi-contact connector comprises resilient strips of conductive material each affording a pair of contact-making areas spaced from each other in the direction of the length of the strip. For making connection to and between pads a, b on printed circuit boards B, C, D in a stack, Fig. 3, the connectors comprise strip contacts 21, 31, 41 looped as at 28 to produce two contact-making areas and fixed between glass-epoxy laminate strips, e.g. 23, 29 and slab 22 by means of a thermosetting resin bonding tape. Connector 41, 42 &c. makes contact with a tape cable E input to the stack. An edge connector, Fig. 1 (not shown), may be produced by bonding together two connectors similar to 21, 22 &c. in a suitable jig. The contacts may be the exposed ends of tape cable like structures which may be made by the following methods. In a first method, Fig. 8, beryllium copper strips are drawn from rolls 124 through a spacer 125 and attached to rubber faced clamping jaws 127a which are then drawn off a desired distance. Dies 129 then produce the looped regions and contact areas and further rubber faced jaws 127b clamp the strips before severing by a guillotine 130. The strips are then plated with silver and the contact areas with gold. After plating insulation is moulded round the strips and the connectors are completed by bonding on slabs and strips of glass epoxy laminate. In a second method, the strips 101 are produced by chemical milling from a sheet to form a grid, Fig. 9. The method proceeds as before, and after bonding of the slab and the strips 108, 109 the support parts of the grid are cropped off at tu and v, w.
