Abstract

1383262 Reacting oxidized polyethylenes HOECHST AG 11 Jan 1973 [15 Jan 1972] 1561/73 Heading C3P Waxy reaction products are prepared from oxidized polyethylenes having a dicarboxylic acid content of 20 to 90 weight per cent by (a) partially or completely esterifying the oxidized polyethylene in the melt at 100‹ to 160‹ C. with an aliphatic alcohol having 2 to 32 carbon atoms, or (b) reacting the molten oxidized polyethylene at 100‹ to 160‹ C. with a salt or hydroxide of a mono-, bi- or trivalent metal, or (c) partially esterifying the molten oxidized polyethylene with a C 2-32 aliphatic alcohol and then reacting the product obtained with a salt or hydroxide of a mono-, bi- or trivalent metal. Specified alcohols are ethylene glycol, propanediol, butanediol, diethylene glycol, trimethylol propane, pentaerythritol, ethanol, stearyl alcohol and montanol. Specified metal compounds are hydroxides, carbonates, acetates, stearates and montanates of lithium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and aluminium. The products may be used in making polishes and as processing aids in plastics materials. In examples oxidized polyethylenes are reacted with (1) ethylene glycol and sodium hydroxide, (2) calcium hydroxide and (3) butanediol and calcium hydroxide.
