Abstract

1382994 Loading mechanism for broaching machines G BOWYER 4 Feb 1972 [19 Feb 1971] 5037/71 Headings B3L and B3B A loading mechanism for a broaching machine of the kind in which a workpiece carrying fixture is connected to an endless driven chain which serves to move the fixture past a broach comprises a carriage movable alongside the fixture, means for locking the carriage to the fixture or chain, a workpiece holding member 16 mounted on the carriage and including means for depositing a workpiece in the fixture whilst the carriage is moving therewith and means for moving the carriage in the opposite direction to the fixture when the workpiece has been loaded. A guide block 10 has a body member 12 mounted thereon by rollers 13. A support 15 for the workpiece gripping device 16 is slidably connected to member 12 by pillars 14. Movement of support 15 vertically is controlled by roller 23 and cam surface 24. Horizontal movement of member 12 is by means of a member 28 which is fixed to the chain. A projection 27 engages star wheel 25 which is held against rotation by a roller 31 that engages in a depression 30 in a drum to which wheel 25 is affixed. Initial engagement of member 28 with wheel 25 causes the wheel to rotate against the resistance of roller 31. This causes roller 31 to move from one depression to the next. At this point a ram 33 is activated to hold roller 31 firmly engaged with the drum to prevent further rotation. Gripping device 16 consists of jaws 17 operable by a ram 20 acting through a roller 21. The jaws are pivotably connected to blocks 18 to allow them to pivot relative thereto if they meet an obstruction. Reverse movement of the carriage is by means of ram 34. During such movement a ram 25 is operated to hold support 15 in a raised position.
