Abstract

1382580 Radially expanding foamed plastics pipes YORKSHIRE IMPERIAL PLASTICS Ltd 26 June 1972 [28 June 1971] 30268/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division F2] A foamed thermoplastics pipe is placed in a former 8, heated to a temperature above its glass transition temperature and below the melting point, and then distended by fluid pressure into contact with the former to orientate the thermoplastics material. A mixture of PVC and azodicarbonamide are heated to foaming temperature (170-200‹ C.), extruded, and the formed pipe cut into lengths. Each pipe length 23 is placed on a hollow support mandrel (not illustrated), and clamped at each end by chevron PTFE rings 20 and brass rings 21, 22 between plugs 7 and 13 that are attached to the end of the female former 8. The former 8 and pipe length 23 are placed in a hot water bath at 86‹ C. for 20 minutes, the water passing through interrupted end flanges 6, and passages 15. Compressed nitrogen (or hot water or air), is passed into both ends of the pipe length through passages 15 to radially expand the length 23 into contact with the former 8, which may be grooved or include annular projections. The pressure is raised at 10 lb./sq. inch/minute to 60 p.s.i., while hot water bleeds through tiny holes in the former 8. The former and pipe length are placed in a cold water bath at 10‹ C. for 10 minutes, whereafter the nitrogen pressure is released. The tapered ends of the pipe length are cut off. Radial expansion at 80-90‹ C. for PVC (or 150‹ C. for polypropylene heated by hot air or radiant heat) causes orientation of the plastics. Uses.-Soilpipes, or rainwater downpipes.
