Abstract
1382553 Infra-red heaters; incadescent oil fires R R MENDELSON 23 Feb 1973 [8 March 1972] 9111/73 Headings F4T and F4W An infra-red heater comprises a refractory material combustion chamber 12 having means for introducing fuel and air into one end thereof and an apertured wall 16 across the other end thereof, the wall 16 having inner and outer surfaces formed so that the surface portions between the apertures 60 therein are generally planar chamber 12 and wall 16 being heatable to incandescence upon burning the fuel-air mixture in chamber 12, and said inner and outer generally planar surface portions of wall 16 respectively reflecting heat back into chamber 12 and radiating heat outwardly thereof, the apertures 60 defining an open area through the wall 16 of about from 1 to 5% of the total area of the inner or outer surface thereof. The chamber 12 may be made of a high-temperaturerefractory fibre material having an organic or ceramic bonding agent therein, and wall 16 may be of stainless steel. Chamber 12 is mounted within a cylinder 14 and the heat-transfer barrier provided by a space 72 may be rendered more effective by inclusion of insulating material in space 72. An electric motor 52 drives a fuel pump 48, providing an oil fuel spray at a nozzle 40, and a fan 50 providing a swirling air stream via nozzle 42 and swirler vanes 46. The fuelair mixture is ignited by electrodes 54. The heater may be of circular section, as shown, or of square cross-section and may be pivotally supported on an angle-iron floor-stand.
