Abstract

1382541 Cutting cloth by laser beam HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO 17 Jan 1973 [19 Jan 1972 (2)] 2445/73 Heading B4B [Also in Division G3] A laser beam cutter comprises a focused laser beam, the position of which relative to a material to be cut is controlled by a computer in accordance with stored data representing a plurality of separate spaced apart cutting-path patterns. As shown, Fig. 1, a beam of radiant energy from a CO 2 laser 11 is projected into a cutting area 13 by optical devices 14, 15 which move in response to signals from an electronics system 19 controlled by a digital computer 21. A textile material to be cut is fed from a spreader 43 and supported in a single layer on a conveyer 17 which is driven in steps to bring successive portions of the material into the cutting area. A laser power supply 27 and a material handling electronics system are controlled by a panel 29 responsive to outputs from the computer. The laser beam along path 11a is turned by a pentaprism 14 along a path 11b and received by an optical system 15a, Fig. 3, wherein it is reflected by a focusing mirror 57 on to a mirror 58 and is brought to a focus at the plane of the textile material to be cut. In an alternative arrangement, the mirror 57 is replaced by a lens system. The enclosure 15a is ventilated with air or nitrogen which is partially outleted to extinguish any flames in the cutting area. The instructions to the computer 21, Fig. 1, are provided from a tape 25 through a reader and comprise data relating to a plurality of textile parts for making up suits which are arranged to minimize wastage. A plurality of cutting areas 13 are provided on the conveyer and the description in the Specification sets out the procedure whereby parts are allotted to a particular area. In a complete system, Fig. 5, a slotted conveyer 17, having a honeycomb sub-structure which is evacuated for removal of debris, is supported on pillars 97. At the delivery end is provided a fabric spreader 43 and at a pick-up section 90 a scrap-bin 85. Each cutter 13A, 13B has a fixed laser source 11A, 11B and is preceded by a printer 91A, 91B, to identify the part when cut. Each cutter and printer is moved by a cross-arm assembly 127 which is positioned in accordance with signals from servo amplifiers 77 controlled by a computer 21, 23 in a control booth 123.
