Abstract

1382486 Elastomeric layer containing laminate GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 6 April 1972 [28 April 1971] 16000/72 Heading B5N A structure comprises at least one layer of elastomeric material having bonded thereto at least one layer of fibrous material which has been treated with an aliphatically unsaturated bisimide, a reaction product of such a bisimide with an organic polyamine or a mixture of such a bisimide and such a reaction product, the treating agent in the structure being in a cured state. The bisimide preferably has the structure where R 1 is an alkylene, e.g. ethylene group, an arylene group, a cyclohexylene group, at least two arylene groups bonded to one another through at least one of the radicals -CH 2 -, -SO 2 - and -O-, or at least two cyclohexylene groups bonded to one another through -CH 2 - radical, R 2 is and wherein R 3 is H or CH 3 . The reaction products may be derived from a bisimide of formula wherein D is a divalent radical containing a carbon-to-carbon double bond and A is a divalent radical containing at least 2 carbon atoms and a primary diamine of formula where B is a divalent radical having not more than 30 carbon atoms. The elastomeric material may be a natural or synthetic rubber, e.g. an ethylene-propylene copolymer, a diene modified ethylene-propylene copolymer, a butadiene polymer, natural rubber, an isobutylene-isoprene copolymer, a polychloroprene, a polysiloxane, a butadiene acrylonitrile copolymer, a chlorosulphonated polyethylene or a styrenebutadiene copolymer. The fibrous layer may be formed of fibres of glass, e.g. glass fabric, asbestos, synthetic material or stainless steel. The structure may be made by treating the fibrous layer, e.g. by coating or impregnating with the bisimide material and bonding the treated fibrous material to the elastomeric material under elevated temperatures to cure the bisimide material.
