Abstract
1382223 Pillow stuffing TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 19 Jan 1973 [19 Jan 1972 25 Jan 1972] 3020/73 Heading A4M [Also in Division D1] Spherical or cylindrical bodies of bonded intermingled fibres of length at least 2À0 cm may be used as filling material for pillows, quilts, sleeping bags and jackets. Preferably at least 80 wt. per cent of the fibres are contained in a spherical shell or annulus space between 0À7R and 1À0R from the centre of the sphere or axis of the cylinder, where R is the radius and is preferably 2À5 to 2À5 mm. In the embodiment of Fig. 6C a continuous filament or continuous multifilament yarn 3 is fed to nozzle 4 and cut as it is effected through outlet 8. The stream of air and fibre passes through tube 9 and the fibres are collected in the hemispherical end of vessel 11 the vessels having perforations through which the air passes thereby compressing the fibres into a body. The gas stream is directed eccentrically of the vessel axis to rotate the fibrous body producing a spere in which the outer layers have been densified by the centrifugal force. To ensure this vessel 11 may be moved horizontally with respect to tube 9 Fig. 6B (not shown). Tube 9 may be removed and air directed on to the fibrous body by a tube (14), Fig. 6D (not shown) aligned at an angle to the axis of vessel 11. In the embodiment of Fig. 8B a cylindrical fibrous body is produced by directing an air stream containing fibres into cone 26 and the fibrous body removed by belts 27, 28. A second pair of belts 29, 30 may be driven at higher speed to draft the body 4 fold. The fibres may be of nylon, polyester, polyacrylate, polyvinyl alcohol, polyvinyl chloride, polymethane or polyvinyl chloride. At least 30 wt. per cent of the fibres may be of a polymer melting at least 30% below the remaining fibres, have a high melting core 1 low melting sheath or comprise low melting staple fibres or powder added to the air stream carrying the long fibres, bonding being produced by heating specified low melting polymers are a copolyester of polybutylene terephthalateisophthalate-odipate, nylon 6, 12, 66 and 6, 10 and copolymers thereof and a copolymer of acrylonitrile and methacrylate. Where the low melting polymer is in the form of fibres it should not shrink more than 10% more than the other fibres at the bonding temperature. Bonding may alternatively be accomplished by spraying the fibrous body with at least 10% of a silicone or an acrylate ester as a liquid emulsion and heating.
