Abstract
1382094 Aerials H C HUSBAND 6 June 1973 [13 April 1972] 17098/72 Heading H4A In order to maintain the required shape of a radio reflector or like structure during use in spite of varying deforming forces caused by changes in the operating conditions, measurements of such changes are made and are applied to a control means which is arranged to develop from a storage means a plurality of control signals for application to actuators which produce mutual displacements between portions of the structure in compensation If the distortions caused by said forces. The storage means develops said displacements from previously measured values of the distortions produced by various conditions of operation. An aerial assembly 1 has a large reflector comprising sheets 2 of suitable reflective material which are mounted on individual frames 3. Each of said frames is supported from a main framework 4 through the intermediary of a plurality of actuators 5. The framework 4 comprises a circular rim 4a, arms 4b, and a hub 4c. The aerial assembly 1 has a mounting 6, which provides for its rotation in azimuth and in elevation. Signals corresponding to the rotational displacements of the aerial assembly are transmitted over a link 7 to a control device 8, which is also fed with signals corresponding to wind speed and direction (devices 9, 10), temperatures of different parts of the structure (devices 11, 12) and air temperature and barometric pressure (devices T, P). The control device 8 provides output signals for controlling each of the actuators 5 to reduce or eliminate distortion of the reflective surface caused by changes in the monitored operating conditions. The actuators 5 may be in the form of hydraulic jacks, and they may be operated in stepped manner by pulsed output signals. The control device 8 may comprise analogue computing means or may alternatively comprise a programmed computer in which each programme corresponds to a different set of operating conditions.
