Abstract

1381946 Measuring force electrically WESTLAND AIRCRAFT Ltd 26 Jan 1973 [28 Feb 1972] 9020/72 Heading G1N Apparatus for measuring the tilting and radial forces in the shaft of a helicopter rotor comprises a whirl tower for supporting the rotor shaft and blades, including a drive-shaft 17, Fig.2, supported between two spaced sliding bearings 26, whose housings 45 are each attached by radial links 28, 29 to a fixed structure 30, wherein strain gauges 35 mounted on the links 28, 29 are connected via slip rings 43 additively in a first bridge to measure radial force, and differentially in a second bridge to measure tilt of the assembly. The links 28, 29 of each pair are mounted at right angles to each other. Strain gauges 32 are mounted on the drive-shaft 17 to measure rotor torque. The pitch of the rotor blades is varied by three control actuators 22 whose displacements are measured by potentiometers 35, the resulting strain being measured by strain gauge resistors 36. The shaft 17 is further supported by thrust bearing 39 whose housing 38 is attached to a fixed base-plate 25 by links 39 carrying strain gauges 44.
